Book I — The Gods in Council—Minerva’s Visit to Ithaca—The Challenge from Telemachus to the Suitors.
Samuel Butler translation · free to read · Book 1 of 24
In this book Athena comes to the hall as Mentes. Mentes card
Tell me, O Muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide
after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit,
and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was
acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his
own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could
not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in
eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them
from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, oh
daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them.
So now all who escaped death in battle or by shipwreck had got safely
home except Ulysses, and he, though he was longing to return to his
wife and country, was detained by the goddess Calypso, who had got him
into a large cave and wanted to marry him. But as years went by, there
came a time when the gods settled that he should go back to Ithaca;
even then, however, when he was among his own people, his troubles were
not yet over; nevertheless all the gods had now begun to pity him
except Neptune, who still persecuted him without ceasing and would not
let him get home.
Now Neptune had gone off to the Ethiopians, who are at the world’s end,
and lie in two halves, the one looking West and the other East.1 He had
gone there to accept a hecatomb of sheep and oxen, and was enjoying
himself at his festival; but the other gods met in the house of
Olympian Jove, and the sire of gods and men spoke first. At that moment
he was thinking of Aegisthus, who had been killed by Agamemnon’s son
Orestes; so he said to the other gods:…
Fact — Butler’s English as written (Jove, Minerva, Ulysses). Fiction — story / cinematic (names match Fact for now). Mythic — Greek names closer to Homer (Zeus, Athena, Odysseus). Default.
Mythic uses the Greek names Homer’s world used; Fact keeps Butler’s English.
Peoples and factions in the poem — not a voyage map.

Odyssey Living Reader · FAQ
Free source text and living tools for the poem — useful before, during, or after any film adaptation.
No paywall. Guests welcome.
What is this?
A free Living Reader for Homer’s Odyssey in the Samuel Butler public-domain English translation. All 24 books. No paywall. Part of the Vayati Constellation Narrative Server pattern.
What are the Fact, Fiction, and Mythic lenses?
Fact — Butler’s English as written (Jove, Minerva, Ulysses). Translation baseline.
Fiction — story / cinematic register (names currently match Fact; fuller prose later).
Mythic — Greek forms closer to Homer (Zeus, Athena, Odysseus). Default.
You can change the lens at any time. Your choice is remembered on this device (and across devices when signed in). Mythic uses the Greek names Homer’s world used; Fact keeps Butler’s English.
Is the text the same in every lens right now?
Core Butler prose is shared. Names follow the lens (e.g. Jove under Fact / Fiction, Zeus under Mythic). Full differentiated lens prose remains planned.
How is this different from Nolan’s film or the Grok Imagine Odyssey?
Those are cinematic adaptations. This surface is the free source text of the poem itself, with living tools (characters, relics, Narrator framing, voyage progress, and an optional bridge into the Great Hall). Use it before, during, or after any film version. We do not take sides in adaptation debates; we keep the poem open and explorable.
Why does the poem start in the middle of the story?
Homer begins in medias res — in the middle of things. Book I opens on Ithaca with Telemachus and the suitors; Odysseus’s wanderings are told later through memory and song. The Living Reader preserves that structure. The voyage timeline and book cards help you orient.
What is the Narrator / Poet frame?
Homer (and Calliope) speak to the audience. Characters inside the story only know what they see and hear. The short poet frame at book openings and selected moments restores that audience-privileged knowledge without turning the reading surface into a classroom.
What are living names / gilded words?
Selected character and object names in the prose can be tapped to open a quiet card (character or relic). They do not interrupt continuous reading unless you choose them. Some first mentions of groups (Achaeans, suitors) may open a Communities card the same way.
What are Communities?
Short cards for peoples and factions in the poem — for example the Achaeans (the Greeks), the suitors (the men in Odysseus’s house), and Ithaca (the home island). They sit under Explore deeper and do not interrupt reading unless you open them. They are not a map of the voyage.
What is Guided reading (None / Step / Pace)?
None — free scrolling, classic reading.
Step — advance one unit at a time when you are ready.
Pace — text reveals at a steady pace; tap to move faster.
Modes are optional. Progress and exact-place restore still work.
What is Focus / Immersion?
One control that collapses most chrome so the text and measure stay primary. Exit is equally simple (Focus again or Esc). Living tools remain available when you want them.
Can I read without signing in?
Yes. Guests have full free access to all 24 books, local progress on this device, lenses, guided modes, and living tools. Sign in only if you want the same voyage across devices and deeper constellation features.
Where does my place save?
On this device by default. Sign in to continue across devices. Exact-place restore tries to land you on the same sentence or unit when you return (especially useful in Step / Pace).
What is the Living Bond?
The Living Bond links the pure text of the Living Reader with the spatial place of the Great Hall so poem and place can move together. Either side can soft-guide the other when both are open. You can read without the hall, enter the hall without the reader, or open the Bond and let the story walk with you. Free. No account required for the basic bond. Use Click to Link Player (becomes Living Bond when active). Movement is website travel — not a Rift teleport, not a forced second window, and not JCastaway.
Yes. The Great Hall of Odysseus (Book I Sequence) lives at odyssey.vayati.com. From the Reader you can open “Enter the Great Hall”; from the Hall you can open “Open the tale.” The optional soft link between them is the Living Bond (also called Player Link in some UI). Movement is website travel, guest-honest, and optional. Living Bond is Odyssey Reader ↔ Odyssey Great Hall only — not JCastaway.
How do Movie Signal and Production Fragments work?
The film is being made in public on X. Movie Signal surfaces production fragments (The Hall Remains first-party trailer, Dialogue Test 62) and a curated From-X strip so you can watch here or on X, then return to the free Butler poem. Nothing blocks Begin — reading stays default. Soft Film ↔ Poem notes appear only in a few books (for example Book I and Book XXIII), once you have scrolled in, and you can dismiss them forever. Follow the film signal accounts from the X strip if you want the ongoing making-of; the poem always remains free here.
Why does this Reader send me to X?
Because that is where the Grok Imagine Odyssey is being announced, re-shared, and tested in public. We keep the free Homeric text here and offer quiet doors to X for the film signal — never a hard sell before you read, never a map of the voyage, never culture-war framing.
Is this the official Homeric text?
It is the Samuel Butler public-domain English prose translation, widely used and free. Attribution: Homer (author), Samuel Butler (translator). Site design, art, Narrator framing, and living layers are Vayati Constellation presentation.
