Now there came a certain common tramp who used to go begging all over
the city of Ithaca, and was notorious as an incorrigible glutton and
drunkard. This man had no strength nor stay in him, but he was a great
hulking fellow to look at; his real name, the one his mother gave him,
was Arnaeus, but the young men of the place called him Irus,148 because
he used to run errands for any one who would send him. As soon as he
came he began to insult Ulysses, and to try and drive him out of his
own house.
“Be off, old man,” he cried, “from the doorway, or you shall be dragged
out neck and heels. Do you not see that they are all giving me the
wink, and wanting me to turn you out by force, only I do not like to do
so? Get up then, and go of yourself, or we shall come to blows.”
Ulysses frowned on him and said, “My friend, I do you no manner of
harm; people give you a great deal, but I am not jealous. There is room
enough in this doorway for the pair of us, and you need not grudge me
things that are not yours to give. You seem to be just such another
tramp as myself, but perhaps the gods will give us better luck by and
by. Do not, however, talk too much about fighting or you will incense
me, and old though I am, I shall cover your mouth and chest with blood.
I shall have more peace tomorrow if I do, for you will not come to the
house of Ulysses any more.”
Irus was very angry and answered, “You filthy glutton, you run on
trippingly like an old fish-fag. I have a good mind to lay both hands
about you, and knock your teeth out of your head like so many boar’s
tusks. Get ready, therefore, and let these people here stand by and
look on. You will never be able to fight one who is so much younger
than yourself.”…

What is this?
A free Living Reader for Homer’s Odyssey in the Samuel Butler public-domain English translation. All 24 books. No paywall. Part of the Vayati Constellation Narrative Server pattern.
What are the Fact, Fiction, and Mythic lenses?
Fact — Butler’s English as written (Jove, Minerva, Ulysses). Translation baseline.
Fiction — story / cinematic register (names currently match Fact; fuller prose later).
Mythic — Greek forms closer to Homer (Zeus, Athena, Odysseus). Default.

Is the text the same in every lens right now?

How is this different from Nolan’s film or the Grok Imagine Odyssey?
Those are cinematic adaptations. This surface is the free source text of the poem itself, with living tools (characters, relics, Narrator framing, voyage progress, and an optional bridge into the Great Hall). Use it before, during, or after any film version. We do not take sides in adaptation debates; we keep the poem open and explorable.
Why does the poem start in the middle of the story?
Homer begins in medias res — in the middle of things. Book I opens on Ithaca with Telemachus and the suitors; Odysseus’s wanderings are told later through memory and song. The Living Reader preserves that structure. The voyage timeline and book cards help you orient.
What is the Narrator / Poet frame?
Homer (and Calliope) speak to the audience. Characters inside the story only know what they see and hear. The short poet frame at book openings and selected moments restores that audience-privileged knowledge without turning the reading surface into a classroom.
What are living names / gilded words?
Selected character and object names in the prose can be tapped to open a quiet card (character or relic). They do not interrupt continuous reading unless you choose them. Some first mentions of groups (Achaeans, suitors) may open a Communities card the same way.
What are Communities?
Short cards for peoples and factions in the poem — for example the Achaeans (the Greeks), the suitors (the men in Odysseus’s house), and Ithaca (the home island). They sit under Explore deeper and do not interrupt reading unless you open them. They are not a map of the voyage.
What is Guided reading (None / Step / Pace)?
