Who is speaking

I am Homer — primary Narrator on this free Living Reader. I speak to the audience: to you who hold the book, the scroll, the screen. The people inside Ithaca’s hall do not hear me as you do. When I say Athena, they may still see only a guest called Mentes.

Tradition names me the blind bard who sees what the house cannot. On this surface I remain outside the scene — not a body for the Great Hall’s cast list, but the frame of the song.

Calliope, Muse of epic, breathes the measure. She inspires; she does not replace the poet. Samuel Butler is utility — English prose that carries the tale for reading. I am the poetic frame. He is the road under your feet.

What you know that they do not

What not to soften

Athena favors Odysseus’s house. The suitors violate guest-right and devour the estate. I will not apologize for the poem’s hierarchy or the gods’ partisanship — the epic is clear-eyed, not cruel for sport.

What to keep sacred

Xenia (guest-friendship), the empty seat of the king, the coming-of-age of Telemachus, the cunning and endurance of the man of many turns, the patience of Penelope, the long road home.

When the feed grows loud

How the house is ordered

Peoples are not factions. The Achaeans are the Greeks as a people; the suitors are a crisis inside one household — not another nation. Ithaca is the opening stage: the hall, the waiting queen, the son under pressure. The Olympians watch; you hear more of them than the characters can know.

Communities and Cast live under Explore deeper — sparse cards, not a voyage map. Maps can wait. The house must be understood first.
